Trends

Every fashion season we hear an endless amount about the latest trends and what we “must have” in our wardrobe to be considered current. Well, that’s not too overwhelming and expensive now is it? I enjoy knowing about trends but that’s because I love to shop and can ignore the latest “must-haves” that don’t interest me. When I see people who only participate in trends for their style choices I find it feels a little lifeless. I think we can participate in trends that interest us and that reflect our personal style. That way we bring life, depth and dimension to the creations. I don’t think that all “must-haves” are truly needed. Fashion and fashion trends are tools that we get to choose to use to present ourselves. If a trend appeals to you then find it in a way that you can integrate into your style, it doesn’t have to be THE ONE IT item. I prefer to find something that has the flavour of a trend but in a classic nature to ensure longevity and to ensure that it reflects my personality rather than a generic interpretation. Last year I heard the Canadian designer Marie Saint-Pierre speak about her upcoming collection and she said one of the things that she loved about seeing her pieces worn by different people was the different ways each person interpreted her designs and used them to reflect their own personality and lifestyle. Isn’t that what is so wonderful about being our unique selves?

The latest trends that are of interest to me are denim with some strong emphasis on distressed denim, fringe and stacked bracelets. I live in denim and could really over purchase this item. My husband might argue that I have already done so since he thinks I have enough jeans to wear a different pair every day of the month. I am still trying to figure out why that is a problem and am still hunting for more coloured denim, since I have a 36″ inseam it can be quite challenging (my husband has lots of coloured denim since he seems to be a more “normal” fit). I should also be clear that fringe has always attracted me so it’s just a bonus that it’s trendy. I am still hunting for just the right interpretation of that trend, one that reflects me and that I feel that I can live with for quite some time to come even after it’s not the latest IT item. Stacked bracelets on the other hands have never really been my thing as I have tiny wrists that make bracelets a bit cumbersome. Over the last 6 months I have met two jewelry artists/designers and found items that both appeal and work very well for me. Working directly with the designers also allows them to create items that will fit me. These artists are Cat’s Eye Jewelry Design and Tab & Mags.

If you find inspiration from the latest trend items that attract me that is wonderful. If not, that is great information to know about your style choices. Find whatever attracts and inspires you and incorporate that into your style choices.
